Reading a source in kuzushiji 1 – introduction
This exercise will not only allow you to familiarize yourself with the use of hentaigana; but also to grasp the different usage of hiragana to express the same syllabic sound in a Japanese source. The text below is a transcription of the first two phrases of the Hōjōki (often translated into English as “The Ten Foot Square Hut”) by Kamo no Chōmei. To the left, you will find the same section of the text in a version printed ca. 17th century.
